WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED WITHIN SEVERAL ATLANTA AREAS

Many local Atlantans believe the mosquito problem has worsened yearly, this summer being one of the worst.  These pesky pests threaten the body externally, and mosquitos carrying the West Nile virus (WNV) can also affect the body internally. WNV has also been reported at least half a dozen times from Alpharetta to Johns Creek, down into Virginia Highlands and South Fulton. One nationally recognized pest control company, Orkin, has determined that Atlanta is one of the country's fourth most mosquito service requests in 2023 alone.

WNV symptoms are typically moderate to mild.  Most people affected by this illness are over 50, and those with compromised immune systems are at the most significant risk.  It is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cases of WNV occur during mosquito season, which starts in the summer and continues through fall. There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV do not feel sick. About 1 in 5 infected people develop a fever and other symptoms. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness. You can reduce your risk of WNV by using BUG OFF ME by DERMAGLOVE. This is a no-DEET, no-rinse, skin-safe, non-toxic, natural insect repellent that leaves the skin feeling cool, protected, and deeply hydrated. As a secondary precaution, experts suggest wearing long-sleeved shirts, socks, and long pants to prevent mosquito bites when hiking, camping, or other outdoor activities.

Recently flyers were sent out to warn neighbors of WNV cases; several counties intend to spray affected areas with EPA-Approved chemicals. This is being enforced in communities to control mosquitos, mainly active at sunup, in the early morning hours, and late in the afternoon, until sundown.

Residents should be mindful of their surroundings and remember that sitting water, pine straw ground covering, and heavily wooded areas are breeding grounds for these pests. Anyone who is going to be outside should also take steps to protect themselves and their pets too.
