From the beginning, humans have depended on the skin for protection, regulation, and sensation. Over 300,000 years, it has formed into a highly functioning protective barrier for the body, housing 100 trillion “good” bacteria, holding approximately 60% water, and actively preventing pathogens from entering the body.
Skin is the body’s only boundary between environmental exposure; the body depends on good bacteria and tissues comprising the body’s immune system. The immune system’s function is to resist infections by identifying unknown pathogens to neutralize the threat.
However, when the immune system, hydration levels, and good bacteria become depleted or threatened in any way, the body becomes compromised, and pathogenic bacteria can grow, causing immediate harm to humans, referred to as opportunistic infections.
The immune system was intended to detect and identify many pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Once a foreign cell or protein is detected, the immune system creates antibodies to fight the intruders, sending special cells ('phagocytes') to eliminate them.
A healthy functioning immune system can detect differences between the body's healthy cells, good bacteria or tissues, and 'foreign' cells. Detecting an unhealthy intruder is complicated because intruders can evolve and adapt so that the immune system will no longer identify them.
